About Us
Engineers in all fields are in high demand in the Portland metropolitan area. PSU graduates of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering usually go directly to work in their chosen field in consulting firms or government agencies.
Portland State University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was noted in a recent publication of the Structural Engineering Institute, a member Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers, as offering a complete curriculum in Structural Engineering education. Educators and practitioners of structural engineering around the country have been working since 1999 to identify a national standard for the core curriculum and necessary content that would qualify a school as having a “high-quality program of structural engineering education” [STRUCTURE magazine, April 2007]. When the requirements were established in 2004, engineering schools across the country were surveyed for compliance. The PSU program, offered through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was one of only 47 out of 122 schools surveyed to meet the standard. This notoriety is largely the result of work by the faculty to develop comprehensive courses for undergraduates that expose them to the necessary topics in the structural engineering field.
Vision
Our vision is that we will become the premier Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in the Northwest for students seeking excellence in education and research.
This vision will be achieved by:
- Creating a nexus of civil and environmental engineering research expertise and activities that are relevant to the Portland metropolitan area, the region and the international community.
- Providing educational offerings that reflect an awareness of change in the global Civil and Environmental Engineering community.
- Becoming a role model in sustainability and community engagement in our profession through our research, our undergraduate and graduate coursework, our capstone design experiences for our undergraduates and our administration of the Department.
- Serving as a resource for the professional community in education, continuing education and research dissemination.
Facilities
The Department moved to the new Engineering Building in December 2005. The new facility includes numerous “green” building features, such as a geothermal heating/cooling system drawing water from underground aquifers and a rainwater treatment system.
Modern, up-to-date laboratories and computing facilities are available for students admitted to the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. These include the infraStructure Testing and Applied Research (iSTAR) Lab, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Lab, computer-aided design (CAD) labs, and structures, geotechnical, environmental and hydraulics labs.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is one of five departments in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. The College was founded in 1960. Please click HERE for more information about the history of the College.
The Civil Engineering undergraduate program at PSU is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET). This national organization sets standards for engineering education defined in terms of curricular content, quality of faculty, and adequacy of facilities. Why choose an ABET-accredited program?
Faculty in CEE are actively engaged in local, national and international research issues that affect the infrastructure of society and the environment. Please click HERE for more information.
The department newsletter is published at the end of each term and provides a look into the life and times here at the department. The newsletter is created through the collected effort of faculty, staff and students. Please click HERE to view the newsletter library.
Please consider making a donation through the PSU Foundation to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In addition to a general account that supports the varied activities of the department we also have accounts to specifically support our labs and a scholarship fund for CEE students.
