iStar Lab Testing

Most all of us have been to the iStar lab and have seen some very large beams, columns and testing mechanisms, yet many have never seen the testing done. Friday, November 20 at 3pm is our chance. Eccentrically braced frames in buildings typically include the use of shear links, which are sections of beams that yield and plastically deform in shear, to provide a stiff and ductile lateral load resisting system. This experiment will test the performance of a modified shear link, which includes additional stiffener components both perpendicular and parallel to the web. These stiffeners are necessary to delay the onset of web buckling during inelastic link deformation. Please wear closed toe shoes. Sign up on clipboard outside of EB Room 385. Show Up outside SB2 on the side with the Starbucks at 3pm. Please note: We're limited to 10 people. The test is running all day and we are hoping to catch the time when failure occurs. There is the gamble that failure will or will not occur while we are there.

ASCE--Seismic Upgrade Tour of SB2

Fortis Construction has coordinated a tour of the work being done on SB2. There is some uncommon geo-technical footing work that is of interest, as well as the steel reinforcements being applied to connect the towers of the structure. It is hoped that ASCE will run 2 groups of 10 people. The first group tour is Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 2pm. We will meet outside of SB2 on the side where Starbucks is located. This tour is limited to the first 10 people that sign up. There is a sign-up sheet on a clipboard outside of EB385. • Please sign up first • Wear proper closed toe footwear, i.e. boots. Sneakers will not be acceptable. • Please show up in front of SB2 at 2pm sharp. • We will be in a very active construction zone, so please be aware of staying out of the way • If the sign up list is full, sign up for an "alternate" and leave your telephone #, and I can call you if there is space. If you miss the first tour, there will be another one scheduled shortly.
