M.Eng. - Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Master of Engineering program is a professional degree designed for those who want the option to do a course work-only and/or internship program. MEng students may be full-time graduate students or may be working in the engineering field and want to complete an advanced degree without a thesis/project requirement and want to use internship credits toward their degree.

In the Fall of 2005 the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering removed the course-work option from the M.S. degree and created the MEngCEE. The basic philosophy of this change was to make a distinction between the M.S. degree as a research degree, with either a thesis or project option, and the MEngCEE degree as a non-research professional degree, requiring only course-work and/or internship credits. The use of the MEngCEE degree as a professional degree is is a national trend in Engineering schools.

How to Apply

Degree Requirements

At the earliest possible date, preferably within the first term but no later that the second term following admission, a candidate must prepare a program of study in consultation with his/her advisor. A copy of the Program of Study Form
should be on file with the Department.

The MEngCEE degree requirements are a minimum of 48 hours of approved graduate course work, which may include up to 8 hours of CE 501, 504, 505, or 506. Internship credits must be arranged a priori between CEE faculty member and the graduate student. Usually this involves completing a project while working and completing a final report. The internship plan must also be approved by the Department. A minimum of 30 credit hours must be taken in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department unless approved by the Department Chair.

Continuation Criteria

Civil Engineering courses for which the student receives a grade of "C+" or lower will not be counted toward fulfilling the requirements, and a candidate is disqualified if he/she receives a grade of "C+" or lower in four Civil Engineering courses.

Advancement to Candidacy

There are several documents that must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies within the final two terms of candidate's graduate study. These documents are:

  1. GO-12, Advancement to Candidacy (due at the beginning of the term of graduation;
  2. GO-16M, Final Oral Examination Committee (when applicable);
  3. GO-17M, Recommendation for the Degree;
  4. Application for Degree.

The deadlines for these documents are published by the Office of Graduate
Studies each term. It is the responsibility of the graduate student to prepare the appropriate documents in consultation with his/her advisor and submit for approval.
